Announcing The Climate Action Fund

Dear Grand Bend Area philanthropists,

Blistering heat. Out-of-control wildfires. Unprecedented drought and most recently, flooding. Canada felt the direct impact of the climate crisis in 2021. And there is more to come. Canada is warming twice as fast as the global average, and the far north is warming three times as fast.

In my previous role as Chair of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, I realized the urgent need for local action to collectively prevent future disasters.

Scientists tell us we have less than a decade to act to avoid catastrophic climate change. As the International Panel on Climate Change puts it, this is “Code Red” for the planet. As a physician, a father and a grandfather, I am committed to doing what I can to turn the tide of this crisis. The Sunset Community Foundation Climate Action Fund is one way we can all help.

Some climate solutions lie at the national and international levels. But there are things that can be done at the individual and community level, too. The Climate Action Fund has been developed to provide local leadership and funding for projects focused on fighting climate change– everything from education, advocacy and tree planting, to protection of natural infrastructure, wetland restoration, and solar installations.

I invite you to join me in giving a gift to the Sunset Community Foundation Climate Action Fund today. There are many national organizations engaged in this fight, but through the Sunset Community Foundation you can have an impact here at home, now and for years in the future.

We’ve known about climate change for decades.  Now we must act. Just as we came together to support one another during the pandemic, we must come together to fight this threat to our health, security, and way of life.

Yours,

Dr. John Howard,
Past Chair, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment
