SUNSET COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES THE FIRST NAMED FUND IN SUPPORT OF BAYFIELD

MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Bayfield, ON – The Sunset Community Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of the Brigadier Morgan and Edith Smith Fund, a family named fund created to honor the legacy of Brigadier Morgan and Edith Smith and to be the first to support initiatives that enhance the unique character of Bayfield.
Brigadier Morgan and Edith Smith retired to Bayfield in 1965, encouraged by Brigadier Fred and Margaret Clift. They quickly became integral members of the village community. Morgan played key roles in a variety of local organizations, including the Ratepayers’ Association, the Bluebird Society, Pioneer Park, and the Anglican Church. He organized Bayfield’s Centennial Celebrations, worked with Brigadier Clift to achieve the reincorporation of the Village, and served as a School Board Trustee, overseeing the consolidation of one-room schools into Huron Centennial School. Known for his dedication and service, Morgan’s legacy lives on in the village he loved — from his fight against erosion to the daffodils he planted throughout Bayfield.
Edith shared Morgan’s love of the village, and together they nurtured a family that remains deeply connected to Bayfield, now numbering over 50 descendants across the globe.
To honor their parents’ memory, their daughter established this fund through the Sunset Community Foundation. Starting in the Spring of 2026, Grants from the Brigadier Morgan and Edith Smith Fund will be available to organizations supporting projects that enrich Bayfield residents and preserve their community for generations to come.
