Dear <<First Name>>, Sunset Community Foundation Awarded $120,000 in grants to Lambton Shores and Huron County Community Organizations The Sunset Community Foundation hosted its first Grants Gala to award 25 grants to community organizations serving Lambton Shores totaling $100,000. Earlier in the year, the Sunset granted $20,000 through the South Huron Vitality Fund serving the South Huron area. “This is the first time we have gathered grantees and our generous funders at an event to share our appreciation for their contributions. We were overwhelmed in a positive way by the level of grant applications. The grant recipients provide much need programming and services to our rural area in areas of focus important to the community,” says Sunset Community Foundation Chair Deb Gill. The Sunset focus areas include children and youth, family and community vitality, health and physical activity, education, social services and low-income impact, preservation of the environment, diversity, equity and inclusion, and arts and culture. The event was sponsored by the White Squirrel Golf Course in St. Joseph’s. |

Vice Chair: Charlene Masschelein and Executive Director: Lisa Reaume attended the BOARD GOVERNANCE BOOTCAMP hosted by Capacity Canada December 5, 6 & 7 It was a fantastic training program that left us inspired, energized, and motivated after networking and sharing best practices with many 2-3 time return attendees from charitable organizations across Canada. We gained many learnings on competencies and tactics for improved board functioning and culture such as additions to onboarding training and regular performance reviews. We reflected several times over the sessions how non-profit and charity board members are volunteers who are faced with challenging and difficult decisions have done over the last year for the Sunset Community Foundation. |
OUR FUND STORYThe Sunset Community Foundation (formerly Grand Bend Community Foundation) works to make our communities stronger, more vibrant and more just and equitable. We support local organizations that have innovative ideas to improve our region, provide thoughtful community leadership, and attract and manage permanent endowment funds. Since the Foundation was founded in 2001, we have supported dozens of organizations in fields from health and education to recreation and the environment, making grants totaling nearly $2 million. Thanks to the vision of our generous donors, the endowment has grown to more than $3 million. The Foundation is home to the South Huron Community Fund and the South Huron Vitality Fund, which are focused on supporting charities and projects in the South Huron area. SCF supports the Funds by providing administrative, granting and investment services. This is a wonderful example of a municipality and family funds coming together to create a geographic community fund under the umbrella of the Sunset Community Foundation. The South Huron Community Fund was established in 2015 to create an endowment that will be used to make grants to local South Huron charities and community projects. As of this year the Municipality has donated $ $150,000 (3 years at $50,000), with year one being split with $10,000 for granting and $40,000 to go to the Vitality Fund plus any earned interest. Plus the gift of the following FUNDS:Cole Family Fund Lavendar Family Fund Riddell Family Fund Mathers Family Fund Prout Familu Fund Down Family Fundfor a total of $80,000 plus any accumulated interest. So the total money in the Vitality Fund over $240,000. The fund is dedicated to meeting the long-term needs of our community, as defined by its residents. Application Deadline is April 1, 2023. The Foundation is also open to the Huron Entrepreneur Fund, which supports small business in Huron County through impact investing. The fund was developed by a group of business leaders in Huron County to support charitable activities in Huron County and foster new businesses and grow existing businesses. Funds are held permanently, with grants made to charities from the investment income. The Fund’s capital will be invested in Community Futures Huron, which provides small business loans to enterprises in Huron. Community Futures, in turn, will provide a return to the Fund. Both the capital and the income from the Fund will be used to benefit the people of Huron County, through business loans and grants to charities. This is a great way for donors to support economic development while reaching out to people in challenging situations. We look forward to developing and growing more funds in the Huron County area to support organizations that serve our communities in this region. We are excited to build upon the incredible footprint and example of the Grand Bend and area, their early stewardship and leadership in community philanthropy. Sunset Community Foundation has the oversight by the Canada Community Foundations Council to serve the Lambton Shores and Huron County areas. When you donate to the Foundation, your gift becomes part of our permanent endowment funds. The revenue from the funds is used to support charities in our region. That’s why we say, “For good. Forever.” |
